Norway's seafood export value dips

The total value of Norway's seafood exports in July was NOK3.5 billion (US$653billion), a decline of NOK269 million (US$50million), or 7% compared to the same month last year.

For the year to date, the value of exports of Norwegian seafood has totalled NOK29.3 billion (US$5.5billion), an increase of NOK 1.6 billion (US$299billion) on the same period last year. This sets a new export record for the period, according to the latest figures from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC).

"The reduction in the value of exports of Norwegian seafood in July is attributable primarily to lower prices on the world market for salmon," says Egil Ove Sundheim, director of market information with NSEC. "However, at the same time, the groundfish sector has shown a positive trend, with record exports of clipfish. July also saw this year's stockfish segment get off to a good start in terms of sales."

The value of exports of Norwegian Salmon fell in July by NOK430 million (US$80million) or 16% compared to the same month last year. The reason for this decline is lower export prices on world markets.

In the same month, the volume of exports of Norwegian salmon increased by 3.4%.

This year to date, the value of exports of Norwegian salmon has stood at NOK17.3 billion (US$323billion), up by NOK732 million (US$137million) compared to the same period last year.

France and Russia were the biggest exports markets for Norwegian salmon in July.

Exports of fresh and frozen groundfish products were up in July by NOK36 million (US$6.7million) to a total of NOK480 million (US$76million). This increase is attributable primarily to increased exports of fresh and frozen haddock.

For the year to date, total exports for this sector have stood at NOK3.5 billion (US$653billion), slightly up on the same period last year.

In July, exports of herring increased in value by NOK35 million (US$6.5million) to a total of NOK124 million (US$23million). For the January-July period, exports of herring totalled NOK2.4 billion (US$448billion), an increase of 18%.

Exports of mackerel also showed good growth in July, increasing in value by NOK 34 million (US$6.3million) or an impressive 179% to a total of NOK53 million (US$9.8million). This year to date, the value of exports of mackerel has totalled NOK805 million (US$145million), an increase of almost 60% compared to the same period last year.
