Holco expands in Queensland
Holco-South Australia's largest domestic fresh meat supplier-opened its new processing and distribution plant in Brisbane.
Holco processes and delivers 300 tonnes of fresh beef, chicken, lamb and pork weekly from its operations in Adelaide and Darwin. The new Queensland site will increase this output by about 50 tonnes of meat products weekly.
The plant will initially employ 11 people.
Holco managing director Mike Rankin says it believes Queensland's income will be about US$21.18 million within 18 months.
Holco is already a major supplier of meat to the mining industry, either through direct contracts or as a supplier to catering companies.
With the rapid mining expansion in Queensland, Rankin said he believes there is potential to significantly increase sales of high quality meat to the mining camps.
He added that an operational base in Queensland would open up new export opportunities for the company.
In 2010-11, Holco achieved turnover of $118 million, a 9% increase on the previous year.
It is aiming for $140 million within two years.
Holco is also a major supplier for the hospitality industry, delivering meat to more than 250 hotels in South Australia and the Northern Territory.
It also supplies healthcare organisations, restaurants and supermarkets, and currently employs 280 full-time and casual staff.
