China issues 8-year plan to boost major agricultural output
China's Ministry of Agriculture Thursday (September 4, 2008) issued an eight-year plan to boost the output of the country's major agricultural products.
The government will set up crop regions to focus on the growth of each of 16 agricultural products - including soy, rice, wheat, corn, rapeseed and cotton - to 2015 according to a statement published on the ministry's Web site.
New technologies and supportive policies will be used to boost crop output in each of these crop regions, it said.
China has been concerned of its grain security, and aims to be self-dependent on grain supply despite growing demand.
