UK university to receive aquaculture research fund
The University of New Hampshire will receive an investment of GBP 355,000 (US$635,000) for new aquaculture research from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The funds will allow the university to research technologies for reducing damage to offshore cages by marine organisms and to develop new depth control technologies to optimise fish feeding, metabolism, stress reduction and growth.
Dr. Richard Langan, director of the Atlantic Marine Aquaculture Centre, said technology for offshore aquaculture has improved vastly in recent years but better production efficiency of native species like cod, haddock and halibut is required in order to be commercially viable.
