Hypor, Japfa Comfeed to build pig genetics venture in Vietnam

Japfa Comfeed Long An, Vietnam's animal feed producer, and Hypor, a global swine genetics firm, have inked a deal to establish a quality high health pig breeding complex in Vietnam.

The new entity, a joint venture between Japfa and Hypor, will be called Japfa Hypor Genetics Company.

The joint venture, which still requires final approval, will produce reproduction pigs and semen for the needs of Japfa's own pig production. It will also set up a sales and service organisation to commercialise gilts and semen in the Vietnamese market. Construction of the new high health facility will start the soonest possible.

"The joint venture is set to combine the strengths of a high health nucleus herd housing Hypor's top genetics with the extensive network of Japfa in Vietnam," said Raf Beeren, managing director for Hypor. "Our team of professionals that brings a background of practical knowledge and hands-on expertise will support this joint venture, Japfa and the Vietnamese commercial pig producers to realise the full potential of our genetics."

"Working with Hypor's breeding stock the last years has been very satisfying and we see this joint venture as a logical extension of our partnership," said Nguyen Quoc Trung, general director of Japfa Comfeed Long An. "With this step we will further professionalise our pig production operation to increase our output to meet Vietnam's rising pork consumption."

Without doubt, Vietnam is today one of the fastest growing markets for pork production in Asia. The nation's pig herd is estimated at four million sows. Pork production growth to 2015 is estimated at 36% to 2.6 million tonnes. With rising incomes stimulating domestic meat consumption growth, production needs to increase to keep pace. Furthermore, the Vietnamese government supports the modernization of the pig production industry to move away from backyard production. Hence a clear reason for Japfa and Hypor to invest in this highly attractive market.
