US meat output continues to lower

 

 

US commercial red meat production amounted to 3.79 billion pounds in July this year, 4% below the 3.96 billion pounds produced in July 2010, according to USDA's monthly livestock slaughter report.

 

Beef production, at 2.14 billion pounds, was 4% below the previous year. Cattle slaughter totalled 2.77 million heads, down 5% from July 2010. The average live weight was down one pound from the previous year, at 1,272 pounds.

 

Pork production totalled 1.64 billion pounds, down 4% from the previous year. Hog slaughter totalled 8.16 million heads, down 4% from July 2010. The average live weight was down one pound from the previous year, at 268 pounds.

 

January to July 2011 commercial red meat production was 28.0 billion pounds, up 1% from 2010. Accumulated beef production was up 1% from last year, veal was down 3%, pork was up 1% from last year, and lamb and mutton production was down 9%.
