Two poultry feed units in Kahuta, Pakistan, have been shut down by the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency, due to environmental pollution.
Pak-EPA director-general Asif Shuja Khan said complaints have been lodged against the two plants since 2003. The plants have been warned to adopt proper methods of feed production but they failed to adhere.
The 2 feed plants - Capital Feed Mill and HB Feed Mill burn animal and poultry waste in the open to make feed, causing a smell which disturbed the region's residents.
Shuja said animal or poultry waste could include a mixture of organic poultry dust, skin debris, broken feathers, insects, aerosolised feed etc and that their burning in the open could cause respiratory, viral and bacterial diseases.
