Ukrainian wheat quality falls below expectations

In 2008, the quality of Ukrainian grain fell below previous forecasts, according to Minister of Agricultural Policy Jury Melnik, on Saturday (August 23, 2008).


To date, 6-grade wheat reserves at grain storages total 54 percent of all wheat volumes, compared to nearly 20 percent in 2007, Melnik said.


Reports from the Ministry said 1-3-grade wheat shares total 11 percent compared to 40 percent in 2007; 4-grade is 22 percent against 32 percent last year; and 5-grade is 13 percent against 8 percent last year.


Melnik said Russia, Belarus and Germany are also having problems with wheat quality.
