Fonterra looks to triple milk production

New Zealand's dairy cooperative Fonterra expects its milk processing operation to triple its daily production to more than 80 million litres per day between now and late October.

Fonterra said that milk suppliers are recovering well from the summer drought that preceded this season.

The company currently processes about 25 million litres of milk per day, according to milk supply general manager Jason Minkhorst.

Fonterra has already announced plans to build a new US$212 million milk powder plant at its Edendale site, with a new large dryer.

Minkhorst said it may be necessary to plan additional facilities in Southland and Canterbury, especially the concentration sites, where 50 percent of the water is removed from milk to reduce volume and lower transport costs.
