Azerbaijan concerned with meat price hike

The meat price increase in Baku is causing the Agriculture Ministry of Azerbaijan to be worried.

Deputy Agriculture Minister of Azerbaijan Bahram Aliyev has reported that in 2010, the country produced 235,800 tonnes of meat, which was by 7.6 % more than 2009. In the first half of 2011, meat production increased by 5.6% and grew by 5.5% in seven months (234.300 tons).

"Despite these figures, the ministry is seriously worried by meat price increase at consumer market. In order to solve this problem, one needs to build sites on meat sale in Baku and give them directly to large farmers for sage. Production and sale of own production can prevent such negative facts," the deputy minister said.

Meat prices at Baku consumer market increased by 25%. Earlier a kilogramme of meat at the consumer market used to be AZN7-8 (US$8.91-10.18) but currently, the price reached AZN10-11 (US$12.72-14.00) and only the pork price remained unchanged at AZN6.50 (US$8.27) per kilogramme.
