Romania's Eggs-Port boosts Aberdeen Angus cattle supply
Eggs-Port Ltd, a Northumberland genetics company based in Hexham, has shipped 120 Aberdeen Angus cattle to Romania, where demand for the breed is growing.
The company bought the yearling heifers on behalf of a client who is expanding his 500-cow herd to meet the increased taste for Aberdeen Angus beef in Eastern Europe and Russia.
Among the shipment were 29 heifers from Broome Park at Alnwick , the farm of Duff Burrell, alongside animals from Scottish herds.
Sheila Eggleston of Eggs-Port said, "There is huge interest in the British native beef breeds, particularly Aberdeen Angus, throughout Europe and is the first of what we hope will be ongoing business with Romania. The buyer intends to expand his herd to 2,000 cows and plans to buy more breeding cattle from the UK in the future."
Earlier this year, Eggs-Port shipped pedigree Beef Shorthorn heifers from Donald Biggar, Castle Douglas, to Austria and has exports of Luing and Highland cattle to Switzerland in the pipeline.
Eggleston said, "The exchange rate is favourable at the moment and we are getting inquiries on an almost daily basis from potential buyers in several European countries looking for Aberdeen Angus and the other British native breeds because of their easy keep and calving advantages."
