Butterball to cut slaughter operations on rising feed costs

US Raleigh, North Caroline-based Butterball LLC announced that it will shut down turkey placement and slaughter operations at its Longmont, Colorado facility two months after it announced reduced operations at the same plant.

The closure of the facility would result in the laying off of 265 workers. The company attributed the cutbacks to rising corn and feed prices it blamed on ethanol production.

"Shutting down turkey placement and slaughter operations at the Longmont facility is, sadly, an effect from our nation's current renewable fuels policy," said Keith Shoemaker, CEO of Butterball.

The company plans to keep the facility open as a further processing plant that will process birds from other locations.
