US, Canadian hog record rise 1%

 

 

The June inventory of all US and Canadian hogs and pigs amounted to 76.9 million heads, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Agricultural Statistics Board and USDA.

 

This was up 1% from June 2010, but down 3% from June 2009.

 

Totalling 7.10 million heads, the breeding inventory was down slightly from last year but up slightly from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 69.8 million heads, was up 1% from last year and up 2% from last quarter.

 

Numbering 35.7 million heads, the pig crop was down slightly from 2010 and down 2% from 2009. Sows farrowed during this period totalled 3.56 million heads, down 2% from last year and down 5% from 2009.

 

The US inventory of all hogs and pigs on June 1 totalled 65.0 million heads. This was up 1% from June 1, 2010 but down 3% from June 1, 2009. At 5.80 million heads, the breeding inventory was up slightly from last year and last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 59.2 million heads, was up 1% from last year, and up 2% from last quarter. The pig crop, totalling 28.9 million heads, was up slightly from 2010 but down 1% from 2009.

 

Sows farrowed during this period totalled 2.88 million heads, down 2% from 2010 and down 5% from 2009.

 

Canadian inventory of all hogs and pigs on July 1 totalled 11.9 million heads. This was up 1% from July 1, 2010, but down 1% from July 1, 2009. Totalling 1.30 million heads, the breeding inventory was down 1% from last year and last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 10.6 million heads, was up 1% from last year and last quarter. The pig crop, at 6.8 million heads, was down 3% from 2010 and down 7% from 2009.

 

Sows farrowed during this period totalled 678,000 head, down 4% from last year and down 8% from 2009.
