New EU regulations threaten Danish pig raisers
Beginning January 2013, new EU regulations will oblige all sow farmers of Denmark to let their pregnant sows wander freely in pens.
A third of Danish sow farmers, however, are not on target to meet these requirements. Henrik Mortensen, Chairman of the Danish pig farmers association (Danske Svineproducenter) forecasts this will result in production decline and those farms that don't meet requirement will lose their value.
Mortensen calls on government to declare its stance on the issue and to clarify what will happen to those sow farmers who will not meet EU regulations in January, 2013.
