Argentina 08-09 corn forecast at 3.6 to 3.8 million hectares

Argentina will plant 3.6 million to 3.8 million hectares with corn in the upcoming 2008-09 season, a 5 to 10-percent drop from last year, the Agriculture Secretariat said Thursday (August 21).

The Secretariat also trimmed its forecast for the 2008-09 wheat planting by 200,000 hectares to 4.5 million hectares. Dry weather prevented planting in many areas, according to the Secretariat.

Farmers have planted 95 percent of the wheat crop and just 15 days remain to complete planting, making the forecast dependent on improving moisture levels, the Secretariat said.

Sunflower seed area is seen rising between 14 and 18 percent to 3-3.1 million hectares, the Secretariat said.

Estimates for Argentina's 2008-09 crop production in millions of hectares (ha) or millions of tonnes (mt).
