Singapore running short of Chinese canned pork products

Singapore is running short of Chinese canned pork products due to rising raw material costs and pork supply shortage in China.

Singapore imported 832 tonnes of canned pork from China in the first half of 2008, only 25 percent of the 3,163 tonnes imported in the same period last year, according to the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA).

As the import volume is unable to meet local demand, importers have turned to US and Brazilian luncheon meat.

However, Singaporean importers admit that other products cannot truly replace canned pork and they would have to wait for more supplies from China.
