US, Canada hog inventory up 3 percent on-year in June
    
 

US and Canadian inventory of all hogs and pigs for June 2008 was 80.6 million head, up 3 percent from June 2007, according to a recent report from the USDA.

 

The breeding inventory, at 7.56 million head, was down 2 percent from a year ago and down 1 percent from last quarter. 

 

Market hog inventory reached 73.1 million head, up 3 percent on-year. Pig crop grew 3 percent on-year to 36.9 million head, while sows farrowed during this period increased 1 percent on-year to 3.89 million head.

 

US hog inventory on June 1, 2008 reached 67.7 million head, up 6 percent on-year. Breeding inventory was at 6.07 million head, down 1 percent both from last year and last quarter. Market hog inventory rose 7 percent on-year and 1 percent from last quarter to 61.6 million head. Pig crop, at 29 million head, climbed 4 percent on-year. Sows farrowed during this period increased 2 percent on-year to 3.09 million head.

 

Canadian hog inventory on July 1, 2008 was 13 million head, down 12 percent on-year. Breeding inventory dropped 5 percent to 1.49 million head from last year and down 1 percent from last quarter. Market hog inventory declined 12 percent on-year to 11.5 million head, but remained at the same level from last quarter. Pig crop was down less than 1 percent from 2007 at 7.88 million head, while sows farrowed during this period totalled 801,700 head, down 1 percent on-year.
