New Zealand Pork receives approval for new pig farm

New Zealand Pork's plans to build the nation's largest pig farm have been approved.

The farm would begin by breeding 3,200 sows before increasing to 4,800 sows, the largest in New Zealand. At full capacity the farm could house up to 40,000 pigs. The farm would also create 50 jobs and offer training facilities for workers.

However, owners Graham Sexton and Colin Kay were disappointed with the 15-year consent period offered as they wanted a consent period of at least 35 years.

Sexton said the shorter-than-expected time period would make it difficult to get a bank loan.

Kay added that the research gone into the pig farm would make it into one of the most technologically advanced in New Zealand.
