Ukraine's veterinary watchdog allows pig imports from Azerbaijan
The State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service of Ukraine has allowed to renew importation of pigs and pig products from Azerbaijan.
According to the statement, an order by State Chief Veterinary Inspector Ivan Bisiuk dated August 17 dropped the ban on importation of pigs and products of them from Azerbaijan. The ban was introduced on January 30, 2008.
According to a statement by the International Office of Epizootics, new cases of African swine fever have not been registered in Azerbaijan since March 2008.
Effective treatments are not available for infected animals, and no vaccines are available to prevent infection.
The only method of prevention is destruction of pigs within a 20-kilometre radius of the source of an infection.
