UK's July pig meat production numbers on decline year-on-year and month-on-month

UK pig meat production figures in July provided by the United Kingdom's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) reveal both a year-on-year and month-on-month fall in volumes.

In July of 2022, pig meat production volumes were recorded as 80,600 tonnes, for a 7% (5,800 tonnes) drop since June. Year-on-year, July 2022 has fallen 4% (3,700 tonnes) since July of last year and is the first month of 2022 to drop behind the previous year's production volume.

The number of clean pigs slaughtered in July also fell 6% (57,700 head) behind July 2021, which recorded a volume of 883,400 head. July 2022 was also 6% (57,800 head) lower than June 2022's throughput.

Carcass weights followed a similar trend, with the average weight of clean pig carcases in July recorded as 88.0kg (0.5kg less than June), but 1.7kg heavier than a year ago.

Regardless of July's overall decrease in production volumes, 2022 to-date is up 4% (22,600 tonnes) on 2021 numbers, for a year total of 618,700 tonnes. The clean pig slaughter number is also at least level with last year, currently at 6.55 million head, for the same January to July period.
