United Arab Emirates' poultry output increases in 2008
United Arab Emirates' poultry meat production rose from 29,000 tonnes in 2002 to 79,000 tonnes in 2008, increasing 40% per year, according to the latest data revealed by the Ministry of Foreign Trade (MoFT).
The UAE was able to achieve 22% of poultry self-sufficiency in 2008, according to import and export data cited by the study which was conducted by researcher Ahmed Al-Ananbeh of MoFTs Analysis and Trade Information Department.
UAE's meat imports in 2009 grew by 12.1% to reach US$1.1 billion in 2010 or 477,000 tonnes of meat. In the same year, UAE's poultry imports totalled US$513 million, registering a 3.7% growth over 2009 and accounting for 47.1% of the UAE's total meat imports to put the country in the 11th place among the world's largest poultry importers in 2009.
The UAE's meat exports stood at US$11.2 million in 2010, up 716% in contrast to the previous year while poultry exports in the same year grew 385% to reach US$1.5 million. Meat re-exports grew by 7.6% in 2010 to US$55 million while poultry re-exports totalled US$40 million (4.6% growth over 2009) and accounted for more than 72% of the country's total meat re-exports.
In 2009, twelve countries received about 59% of the world's total poultry production. The UK came in the first place as the world's largest poultry importer, followed by Germany, while the United Arab Emirates came in the 11th place accounting for 2.7% of the world's total poultry imports.
The data show that UAE's poultry imports grew by 3.7% throughout 2009 to reach US$513 million in 2010. The figure accounted for 47% of the UAE's total meat imports. The total value of the country's poultry imports stood at US$1.5 million (growth of 385%) while re-exports totalled US$40 million (up by 4.6% from 2009).
Brazil, the largest poultry exporter to the UAE, alone accounts for 74.2% of the country's poultry imports, followed by the US with 9.4%, Oman 4.6% and France 5.4%.
Although the UAEs poultry exports are modest and stood at only US$1.5 million, they increased to four Arab countries - Bahrain, Sudan, Qatar and Oman in 2008. In 2010, these exports expanded to include 13 destinations led by Arab countries (69%) with Qatar, Iraq and Bahrain in the first three places.

Data show that Oman, Iran, Jordan and Qatar were the largest destinations of the UAEs poultry re-exports and, combined, accounted for 62.2% of the total.
