Bird flu hits Vietnam's northern central provinces

Thousands of poultry have been infected following the bird flu outbreak in Vietnam's northern central provinces.

As of August 9, the disease was reported to occur in eight communes of Nghe An province and three communes in Quang Tri province.

The number of poultry infected with the disease was 5,080 in the first province and 4,000 in the second one, the local animal health agency said.

Lack of vaccine was the main cause for the disease to break out, said Nguyen The Do, head of the Nghe An provincial Animal Health Department.

Meanwhile, the bird flu was reported to reoccur in southern province of Vinh Long. Local farmers were forced to burry 2,500 infected poultry.
