More pork imports may hurt Chinese farmers
Importing extra pork to wrestle down surging pork prices in China could jeopardise domestic hog breeders' interests, according to a senior official of the National Development Reform Commission (NDRC).
Zhou Wangjun also said that those on a low-income who are more sensitive to food price inflation should be given subsidies in light of the rising cost of living.
China's July CPI hit a record high for the last three years, with the price of pork a major contributor. According to figures from the NDRC, pork prices saw a slight drop in July after a relentless rise throughout the first half of this year.
Zhou predicted that the pork price will drop further by the end of the year, as the market supply increases.
