Ukraine harvests 33.63 million tonnes of grain, slightly slower than 2007

Ukraine harvested 33.63 million tonnes of grain as of August 8, with an average yield of 3.44 tonnes per hectare, the agriculture ministry reported Monday (August 11).

The ministry said the pace of harvesting was somewhat slower than last year but the yields were considerably higher at 3.44 tonnes a hectare compared with 2.06 tonnes a hectare at the same time last year.

Ukraine's unusually hot weather in 2007 stimulated faster development of crops while yields were reduced. The ministry said wheat harvest to date was 23.08 million tonnes.

The ministry expects this year's grain harvest to be 43 million tonnes in clean weight, compared with 29.3 million tonnes in 2007.
