Hungary harvests 5.36 million tonnes of wheat

Hungarian farmers harvested 5.36 million tonnes of wheat from 95 percent of the area sown this year, state news agency MTI quoted the Ministry of Agriculture as saying Friday (August 8).

That figure is already well over last year's 4 million-tonne wheat crop.

The ministry said farmers had gathered the entire autumn barley crop, which came to 842,000 tonnes, and they harvested 471,000 ton of spring barley. Last year, the autumn barley crop was 187,170 tonnes and the spring barley crop totalled 142,090 tonnes, farm ministry figures show.

Farmers have harvested rye from 89 percent of the planted area. Based on that, the ministry expects the rye harvest to reach 105,000 tonne, up from 41,090 tonnes in 2007.

The ministry projects the triticale harvest at 472,000 tonnes this year, up from last year's 397,600 tonnes.
