Vietnam to breed 160,000 tonnes of marine fish by 2015

Vietnam aims to breed 160,000 tonnes of marine fish worth US$1.04 billion by 2015, with 61,000 tonnes from aqua-cultural ponds, 44,000 tonnes from cages and the remaining 55,000 tonnes from concentrated farms.

This is under a plan for breeding development of marine fish in the 2011-2015 period with vision in 2020, which has been approved by the country's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

By 2020, the country will breed between 200,000 and 260,000 tonnes of marine fish valued US$1.8 billion, the ministry projected in its plan.

Coastal provinces Quang Ninh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Vung Tau, Kien Giang and others are among localities chosen for marine fish breeding, the ministry said.

Vietnam has a coastal line of over 3,600 kilometres and has big potential for aquaculture.
