Finland's milk imports taper down in 2011

Imports of milk to Finland in 2011 have decreased slightly to about 40 million litres from 50 million litres last year, said the Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK).

According to MTK, the reduction is due to the higher price of milk in Sweden and elsewhere in the world. Producer prices have gone up in Sweden. Also, Finnish consumers are now more aware of the origin of milk.

Dairy group Arla Ingman said there has been no significant variation in demand for Swedish milk since 2010, adding that imported milk accounts for only about 2% of total milk consumption in Finland.

Imported cheese, on the other hand, sells well in Finland at the moment. Over 40% of all cheese is imported.
