China and Canada to cooperate on rapeseed research

The National Research Council Canada (NRC) and the Oil Crops Research Institute of the Chinese Academy have signed an agreement to collaborate on research to improve rapeseed production, the two groups said Aug. 5.

Canada is China's largest supplier of rapeseed.

Calling it a historic event, Dr. Roman Szumski, vice-president of life sciences for the NRC said that China is for the first time investing directly in agricultural research in Canada to advance a crop important to both countries.

He added that the research would help both countries develop a higher yielding rapeseed and improving agricultural research in both countries.

The first project will involve completing genomics work on rapeseed that will identify genes that affect yield and adaptation to various environmental stresses.
