Argentina allows 600,000 tonnes more for corn exports

Argentina granted the exportation of an additional 600,000 tonnes of 2010-11 corn, bringing the total amount of corn exports to 12.6 million tonnes.

Argentina restricts corn and wheat exports to ensure the domestic market is well-supplied and control local food price inflation. Growers complain that the policy hurts their profits and dampens farm sector investment.

"After these 600,000 tonnes, we believe there must be 1.2 million or 1.3 million tonnes" more corn remaining for export, said Alberto Rodriguez, the head of local grains export industry group CIARA-CEC on Friday (Aug 5).

Argentina is the world's second-biggest corn exporter after the US.
