Marfrig to export beef to US via Uruguay, Argentina units

Brazilian meatpacker Marfrig said it would be exporting processed beef to the US via its unit in Uruguay and Argentina following last week's US suspension of imports from two of Marfrig's Brazilian units.

The suspension was due to differences in inspection criteria between the US and Brazilian organisations.

Marfrig said it will begin production of canned beef and beef jerky at its Fray Bentos unit in Uruguay on August 15. The plant has a daily production capacity of 115 tonnes of canned beef and 10 tonnes of beef jerky.

The new unit will increase the company's production in Uruguay and Argentina, enabling them to meet additional demand created by the temporary restrictions to exports, according to Marfrig.

Marfrig said all other destinations for exports and domestic orders will continue to be served by the Brazilian units.
