Halim faces opposition in its foray into pork business

The Korea Swine Association is opposing plans by Halim Co., a local chicken processing company, to enter the pork processing business.

Halim merged with leading pork processor Sunjin in September 2007 and in last month acquired a 65.1 percent majority stake in Daesang Farmsco, the pork division of food company Daesang Group.

The acquisitions enable Halim to become the leading pork company in South Korea but the Korean Swine Association said the company's foray into pork business may threaten pig farms.

The association stated, "Halim has a history of getting hold of more than 40 percent of the chicken industry and turning chicken farms into consignment-based breeding houses. If it advances into the pork industry with its acquisition of Daesang Farmsco, the same thing will happen to pork farms."

The association also urged Halim to stop building its pig farm in Nonsan City, South Chungcheong Province.

The association wants Halim to concentrate on the manufacturing and processing of chickens and leave pork breeding to existing pig farms. The association said it has communicated their concerns to Halim directors and if it does not get a clear reply by Friday (August 8, 2008), it will continue its protests.
