Drought may hit China's northeastern grain belt in August

Northeast China, the country's major grain production base, may face a drought in August, the Ministry of Agriculture said in a report Friday (Jul 29), citing meteorological agencies.

Northeast China is forecasted to have below-normal rainfall next month while its western regions may see a drought, the report said.

Water is crucial for the ongoing pollination period of corn crops in northeastern areas. The ministry called for timely irrigation to prevent production decline of the crop.

The China National Grain and Oils Information Centre predicted that the country's corn output will reach 181.5 million tonnes this year, up 2.5% over last year.
