EC adds German blood sausage to list of protected products
The European Commission added on Friday, July 29, a German blood sausage to the register of Protected Geographical Indications, which covers protected agricultural products and foodstuffs closely linked to certain geographical areas.
The protected product, called Flönz, is a blood sausage made according to German traditional methods. It is an important element of the annual North Rhine-Westphalia carnival celebrations, and is the main ingredient of the traditional dishes "Kölsch Kaviar" (Cologne Caviar) and "Himmel und Äd" (Heaven and Earth).
Flönz joins the list of over 1,350 products already protected, the EC said in press release.
