Kuwait ends 7-month ban on shrimp fishing

Kuwait is ending its seven-month ban on shrimp fishing as it announced the start of the shrimp fishing season on Saturday, Aug. 1.

In announcing the end of the fishing ban, Zahir Al-Suwayyan, president of the Kuwait Fishermen's Union, expressed the hope that there will be abundant fishing during the whole season, Xinhua reported.

He stressed that while fishing is a difficult profession, it has a great impact on food security and that there's a need to maintain price stability in the markets.

He also called on all shrimp farmers to follow the fishing laws and regulations on protecting fish resources.

Kuwait's Public Authority for Agriculture and Fish Resources started the ban on the catching of shrimp last Jan. 1.
