Workers union sues USDA over increased line speeds at poultry plants
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) has sought to compel the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to stop a programme permitting faster line speeds at poultry plants as it could expose workers to danger, Reuters reported.
The UFCW and five local affiliates in six states, representing 35,000 poultry plant workers filed a complaint to the federal court in Washington DC regarding the new line speed programme.
They argue that the USDA had failed to adhere to proper administrative procedures and overlooked safety of workers when it announced the 2018 waiver programme allowing testing for new procedures, which includes increased line speeds.
