Q1 corn output in Mindanao up 22.3 percent

Mindanao, the second largest and easternmost island in the Philippines, has increased corn output to 883,409 tonnes in the first quarter, up 22.31 percent from 722,269 tonnes in the same period last year, according to data from the Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Agricultural Statistics.

The Caraga region in Mindanao also registered the highest growth of corn output at 56.55 percent. Region XI, Region X and Region XII also increased corn production by 51.38 percent, 40.18 percent and 35.51 percent respectively.

However, Region IX and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) registered a negative growth of corn production at 2.1 percent and 11.09 percent respectively.

Undersecretary Virgilio Leyretana, chairman of the Mindanao Economic Development Council said that the good result showed the island's competitive edge in agriculture.

Leyretana also said hopes are high for Mindanao's agricultural sector, making it a major player in the Philippines' economic recovery, and that they are looking to surpass this year's output targets.
