Australia's June 2011 wheat stocks fall 13% from May

Australia's bulk storage of wheat grain at the end of June 2011 fell 13% to 13.4 million tonnes, compared to May 2011, but stocks were up 35% compared to June 2010.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), of the total wheat grain stored by bulk grain handlers, 54% (or 7.3 million tonnes) was milling grade and 46% (or 6.1 million tonnes) was feed grade. This compares to 87% (8.6 million tonnes) for milling and 13% (1.2 million tonnes) for feed in June 2010.

The poor season and difficult harvest conditions continued to contribute to a lower quality yield of wheat grain in June 2011.

All states in Australia reported decreases in stocks of wheat grain compared to May 2011. New South Wales and South Australia had the most significant falls with 574,000 tonnes and 512,000 tonnes, respectively, but had the largest amounts of wheat grain stored in the month. New South Wales had 4.9 million tonnes and South Australia had 3.2 million tonnes.
