Vietnam expects seafood exports to Australia to bring in US$125 million

Vietnam is expecting to earn US$125 million from exporting 30,000 tonnes of seafood to Australia in 2008, up from nearly US$123 million last year, according to the Vietnam Trade Information Centre (VTIC).

Vietnam exported 10,750 tonnes of seafood to Australia in the first half of 2008, bringing in US$55.54 million, up 19 percent in volume and 20 percent in value on-year, VTIC said.

Catfish exports to Australia accounted for more than 56 percent in volume and nearly 39 percent in value during January-May, while frozen shrimp represented for 25.4 percent and 47.78 percent, respectively.

VTIC said seafood is the second largest export item to Australia from Vietnam during the past five years, behind crude oil.

Seafood exports to Australia peaked at US$126.3 million in 2006, but dropped to US$96.23 million last year. However, the exports have been steadily rising since 2004, when Vietnamese seafood shipments to Australia reached US$77.1 million.
