Vietnam PM urges development of aquaculture in Ca Mau province

Ca Mau province should take advantage of its sea area to develop the aquaculture sector, especially the farming of tiger prawns, in order to improve the livelihood of locals and contribute to national economic development, according to Vietnam's prime minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

In the first half of 2008, Ca Mau obtained an annual GDP growth rate of 10.7 percent, in which agriculture and forestry increased 5.2 percent. However, Nyugen said Ca Mau has poor transport infrastructure and human resources, and limited technological use in production.

Asking relevant ministries and sectors to cooperate with locals to implement infrastructure, urban and industrial zone projects, Nyugen also said Ca Mau should push shrimp farming and increase shrimp raising area to 20,000 hectares in years to come.

To ensure the area's rapid and sustainable development, shrimp farming should be placed as top priority, Nyugen said.
