New accreditation to ensure top quality feed production in New Zealand

Members of the New Zealand Feed Manufacturers Association (NZFMA), which have passed independent audits for the quality of feed production, could now access FeedSafeNZ, a new accreditation which aims to ensure safe feed for animals and the safety of human food.

Annual audits, based on the accreditation, will be carried out by AsureQuality, a company that provides food safety and biosecurity services to the food and primary production sectors around the world.

In future, it will be mandatory for NZFMA member to achieve a FeedSafeNZ status.

"High quality feed is vital not only for the health and wellbeing of animals but also for humans, so it's imperative that feed is manufactured to strict guidelines and is packed and stored correctly to ensure its quality is maintained," said Michael Brooks, the executive director of NZFMA.

He added that FeedSafeNZ will improve farmers' confidence that feeds in use are of superlative standards. "It will help to maintain the high quality of feed sold to farmers and eliminate products that can lead to poor animal growth and production, as well as reducing cross-contamination of ingredients from storage or processing."

As part of the accreditation process, manufacturers are subjected to strict scrutiny which includes an on-site audit of plants and storage facilities as well as operations. Site which have met requirements are allowed to use the FeedSafeNZ logo on their packaging and other materials.

So far, 14 feed manufacturing sites have received the accreditation.
