Denmark begins conversion of temporary confinement crates during sow farrowing, lactation
Denmark has started the conversion of temporary confinement crates during the farrowing and lactation of sows
The action is made ahead of the European Union.
Beginning on October 18, Danish producers will be able to apply for funding for the conversion of farrowing rooms with loose sows or temporary restraint crates.
Kr.25 million (US$3.4 million) will be invested from EU funds through the Danish Rural Development Agency. The subsidy corresponds to 40% of the requested investment and amounts to about Kr.4,000 (US$548.44) per square meter of dedicated area. The conversion to free lactation will be completed by the end of 2024.
On the other hand, new EU proposals for a new animal welfare law are expected by 2023.
