South Korea's farm, seafood exports reach US$2 billion in H1

South Korea's farmed produce and seafood exports in the first half of 2008 brought in US$2.06 billion, up 21.4 percent on-year, according to the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on Wednesday (July 23, 2008).

Of the total, farm and processed food accounted for US$1.3 billion while seafood exports represented US$713.3 million.

The ministry attributed the result to a robust overseas demand for fresh farm products and processed food.

"The export gains are noteworthy since they were achieved in the face of unfavourable conditions like high oil prices, a strike by the country's transportation workers union and bird flu that halted exports of poultry," an official said.

The official said there were sharp sales increase to China, Russia, ASEAN and the Middle East. Exports to China and Russia went up 23.1 percent and 40 percent on-year respectively while export gains to Japan reached 21.8 percent.
