Russia bans on meat from Australian plants to have little impact

Russian has banned meat imports from four Australian plants because of microbial contamination.

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) said the move against the three kangaroo meat processing plants and one beef plant was not a blanket ban on Australian imports.

Russia also banned meat products from EU countries, Brazil and Argentina.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) sought to limit the damage by stating that only a small part of the country's meat export was affected by the temporary ban.

The department noted that an inspection by Russian officials in December did not yield any faults and certified that the system is operating in accordance with Russian requirements.
