Romania's wheat production should hit eight million tonnes by 2020

Romania's wheat production is seen increasing 40% by 2020, down from the level registered last year, to eight million tonnes, half of which will be exported, according to data presented on Thursday (Jul 21) by Agriculture Minister Valeriu Tabara.

In 2010, Romania's wheat production stood at about 5.7 million tonnes.

"With exports amounting to four million tonnes, Romania would join the world's main wheat exporters, but achieving this goal is not that simple," said the minister.

According to Tabara, Russia's decision to ban wheat exports last year helped Romania.

Recently, Egypt, the world's main wheat importer, announced it might include Romania and Ukraine on the list of official suppliers, and a decision in this respect depends on the quality of the wheat production, as well as on the two countries' ability to ensure long-term wheat supplies.
