Pakistan urged to develop shrimp-farming sector

Pakistan needs to develop its shrimp-farming sector and learn from the experiences of other countries, according to Prof. Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi during a one-day seminar on Shrimp Farming Prospect in Pakistan.

Kazmi said Pakistan has to promote its fisheries and shrimp aquaculture so that the sectors could contribute more to agricultural GDP, which is at present only one percent.

As Pakistan started its shrimp farming activities late, it should try to learn from the experiences of other countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia which were losing billions of dollars due to pollution - leading to fish and shrimp diseases, Kazmi said.

Kazmi said Pakistan should try to maintain a high-quality sanitary and phytosanitary conditions by setting up highly advanced microbiological and toxicological evaluation facilities to meet WTO requirements in order to enter new markets to increase foreign exchange earnings.
