Malaysia's domestic beef supply to hit 28 percent by 2010
Domestic beef supply is expected to reach 28 percent in 2010, up 5 percent from this year.
Local beef supply will be boosted upon the completion of new buildings for the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) research station in Muadzam Shah.
Malaysia currently imports 250,000 tonnes of beef annually to meet a demand of 300,000 tonnes, according to Datuk Zulkifli Idris, secretary-general of the Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry.
Zulkifli said with more research and development, the new Mardi station could produce 100 stud bulls of mixed breed in 2010, up from the current 30, to be supplied to local livestock producers.
The new buildings are scheduled for completion by 2010.
