Kyrgyzstan's meat imports increase in January-May

Kyrgyzstan's meat imports rose by US$80 million from January-May this year in contrast to the same period last year, according to Agriculture Minister Torogul Bekov.

Meat imports to Kyrgyzstan amounted to US$270 million for five months of 2011 versus US$189 million in the same period of the previous year.

"The situation with meat exports is like a stick having two ends. If we ban export, consumers will benefit, if we stimulate export, farmers will benefit. 65% of population live in rural areas, 35% is urban population. This question is very complex," the Agriculture Minister said.

The State Anti-Monopoly Regulation Agency proposed to ban meat exports earlier.
