UK wheat exports fall in May

UK wheat exports slowed during May with the lowest monthly total so far during the 2010-11 season, customs data showed on Tuesday (Jul 19).

Shipments during May totalled 75,183 tonnes, down from 93,056 tonnes in April and far below the monthly peak for the season of 393,402 tonnes set in September 2010.

Cumulative exports for the 2010-11 season, which started on July 1, 2010, totalled 2.52 million tonnes, up 14% from 2.21 million in the same period a year earlier, the figures showed.

A slowdown in exports had been anticipated with strong sales in the early part of the season helping to tighten supplies in the second half of the crop year.

The Netherlands has emerged as the most important customer for UK wheat for the 2010-11 season, taking 29,907 tonnes during May for a cumulative total for the season of 620,395 tonnes, up from 225,588 tonnes in the same period a year earlier.

Shipments to Spain, the largest customer for UK wheat in recent years, totalled just 6,800 tonnes in May for a cumulative total of 569,965 tonnes, down sharply from 1.19 million tonnes in the year earlier period.

There were no shipments to customers outside the EU during May.
