Spread between blocks and barrels widens

 

Batavia, NY – Barrel cheese prices finished this week at the lowest level since 24 Mar; the spread between blocks and barrels is growing again and settled Fri at the highest level since Apr (which preceded the final ramp-up of the cheese plant in St. Johns, MI and First District Association's expansion that was completed in late Jun). Lately, we've been hearing an increasing number of comments about "weaker" domestic sales. That has left the USA cheese industry in a very export (and port)-dependent position.
