Philippine government pledges PHP70-million aid to hog farmers

The Philippine Department of Agriculture recently promised hog farmers PHP70 million as piglet subsidy and feed support programme after typhoon Frank.

Of the total subsidy, PHP50 million will be allocated for a piglet dispersal plan and PHP20 million for animal feed subsidies, agriculture secretary Arthur Yap said.

The rehabilitation package for the livestock sector would also include animal health programmes and laboratory services.

Bureau of Animal Industry director Davinio Catbagan said the DA would also have a massive PHP30-million vaccination programme to protect the hog population against possible diseases.

Catbagan explained that the programme is aimed to help small farmers by vaccinating the entire Philippine backyard population to ensure healthy piglets.
